HAVE YOUR RECRUITERS EVER CHASED ANYONE THROUGH A PARKING LOT?

It’s not just your fleet, and it’s not just trucking:
The labor market’s squeezing nearly every sector — even the U.S. military.

Does this sound familiar? “Facing headwinds from the pandemic, the tight labor market, and demographic shifts, the U.S. military is facing large shortfalls in enlistments.” That’s the summation of a recent article from The New York Times, leading with an anecdote about an Army recruiter chasing people in a Walmart parking lot trying to pique interest in enlisting. While there haven’t been any stories (at least not yet) of driver recruiters chasing people in parking lots, the story’s eerily similar to the challenges fleets face in drawing in new drivers to fill empty seats. The story underscores just how competitive the labor market is — and how crucial it is for fleets to implement robust retention efforts and attractive recruiting programs. The competition’s simply too stiff not to.

WHAT WE’RE WATCHING IN THE LABOR MARKET

Since the Spring 2020 downturn, growth in the number of local driving jobs has outpaced long-haul trucking in the general freight category, according to data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Comparing real data — aka non-seasonally adjusted numbers — the number of local driving jobs grew by 10% from January 2020 to April 2022. In the same time period, the number of long-haul jobs grew by just 1.8%. However, in May 2022, long-haul closed the gap some, adding nearly 20,000 jobs in real terms, while local trucking added just 300 jobs. With May’s data, long-haul has now grown by 4.3%, while local is still sitting just shy of 10% growth. The dynamics at play? Shifting consumer spending, growing wages of long-haul jobs, and normalization in the split between contract freight and spot freight fueling hiring by longer-haul fleets. Check it out:
